James N. "Jim" Elkins, director of the Texas Center for Infectious Disease in San Antonio, will retire after 22 years in his position, effective Aug. 31.
Here are four things to know about Mr. Elkins.
1. Mr. Elkins has a healthcare career that spans 45 years.
2. His career has been divided between leadership roles in community hospitals and medical centers, and public service, most often in Texas.
3. In 1994, he was appointed director of public health hospitals and their associated clinics operated by the Texas Department of Health, now, Texas Department of State Health Services, for treatment of tuberculosis and Hansen's disease and quarantine care for infectious diseases.
4. He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Baylor University in Waco, Texas, and a master's degree in healthcare administration from Trinity University in San Antonio.
