Lansing, Mich.-based Sparrow Health System named Emory Wayne Tibbs, Jr., president and CEO, effective in January 2019.
Mr. Tibbs comes to Sparrow from Lynchburg, Va.-based Centra Health, where he served as CEO for five years. During his tenure, Centra's revenues grew from $680 million in 2013 to a projected $1.3 billion this year. He was previously the health system's COO.
Mr. Tibbs also has experience serving as president and CEO of Southside Community Hospital in Farmville, Va., and Bedford (Va.) Memorial Hospital. He has served on committees and boards within the American Hospital Association and American College of Healthcare Executives. He earned his MBA from Averett University in Danville, Va.
Mr. Tibbs succeeds Dennis Swan, who is retiring after serving in the health system's top post since June 2005. Mr. Swan announced plans to retire in March, just one month after CMS sent Carson City, Mich.-based Sparrow Carson Hospital a Medicare contract termination notice following a federal investigation into noncompliance with infection control standards.
