James Flaherty, MD, has been appointed chief of surgical oncology at Hartford, Conn.-based Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center as a member of Saint Francis Medical Group.
Here are seven things to know about Dr. Flaherty.
1. He is an expert in the surgical care of patients with upper gastrointestinal cancers.
2. He currently is an assistant clinical professor of surgery at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in Farmington.
3. Dr. Flaherty is also captain in the United States Naval Reserve and saw active duty at the U.S. Military Hospital in Kuwait in 2005. He received several commendations for his military service.
4. Previously, he served as an attending surgeon at Saint Francis since 1995.
5. Dr. Flaherty was also previously a senior registrar in esophageal surgery at St. James' Hospital in Dublin, Ireland.
6. In 2006, he completed a fellowship in surgical oncology at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia.
7. He graduated from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C., then completed the University of Connecticut Integrated Residency in General Surgery in Farmington.
