Fred C. Rothstein, MD, president of University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland, is retiring after 38 years with UH, according to The Plain Dealer.
Here are six things to know about Dr. Rothstein.
1. Dr. Rothstein, who has been at the helm of Case Medical Center since 2003, will step down at the end of 2015.
2. In an interview Thursday, Dr. Rothstein told The Plain Dealer he is retiring to spend more time with his family.
3. During his time with UH, Dr. Rothstein, who started in pediatrics in 1976, oversaw the transformation of the Case Medical Center into a larger, more modern campus with the addition of the Seidman Cancer Center, the Center for Emergency Medicine and the Quentin & Elisabeth Alexander neonatal intensive care unit at UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital in Cleveland, according to the report. He also helped raise $1.3 billion for UH through its Discover the Difference campaign, and he helped attract a wave of new physicians to UH.
4. Although he has accomplished many things, Dr. Rothstein told The Plain Dealer his most gratifying accomplishment was serving as president of the hospital where he trained as a young physician.
5. In speaking about all of Dr. Rothstein's accomplishments, Thomas F. Zenty III, CEO of UH, said, "Dr. Rothstein will leave a legacy as a humble, yet immensely influential leader whose impact radiates throughout our growing system and Northeast Ohio. In an era of unprecedented change in healthcare, he has been a steadying force. His guidance has helped keep UH agile enough to adapt, and visionary enough to lead."
6. Information has not been released on the search for Dr. Rosthstein's successor.
