Physicians Regional Medical Center CEO resigns: 5 things to know

Karen Metz, CEO of Knoxville, Tenn.-based Physicians Regional Medical Center, has resigned, according to a Knoxville News Sentinel report.

Here are five things to know about Ms. Metz and her resignation.

1. Effective immediately, Neil Heatherly, CEO of PRMC's parent organization, Tennova Healthcare, will take over the role of CEO of PRMC while continuing to serve as market CEO for Tennova, a subsidiary of Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems.

2. Ms. Metz had been CEO of PRMC since 2012. No reason was given for her departure.

3. In a statement, Mr. Heatherly praised Ms. Metz for her work. "Karen has done a remarkable job leading Physicians Regional, especially through the difficult decision to build a replacement hospital. Her professional integrity, ability to develop effective relationships with our physicians and skill at crafting a vision for our future will be missed," he said, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel.

4. Ms. Metz is a former registered nurse turned hospital executive, and has held top posts at several medical institutions. She joined PRMC after serving as CEO of Heart of Lancaster Regional Medical Center in Lititz, Pa. She was also CEO of Davis Regional Medical Centers in Statesville, N.C., and COO at Central Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.

5. At PRMC and other institutions, Ms. Metz was noted for her ability to work with physicians and "to develop programs that helped her hospitals keep up with and exceed the competition," according to the report. During her time at Heart of Lancaster, the organization was able to recruit more than 30 physicians to that facility in three years.
