Portland-based Oregon Health & Science University President Joe Robertson, MD, plans to retire Oct. 31.

Here are eight things to know:

1. Dr. Robertson was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in August. He said the diagnosis came as a shock and "compelled me to re-evaluate my future and my family's well-being," according to a statement.

2. He worked at OHSU since 1985, when he joined the faculty as a retinal surgeon. He served in roles of increasing responsibility, including as director of the Portland-based Casey Eye Institute and dean of the medical school.

3. OHSU named Mr. Robertson president in September 2006.

4. During his tenure, OHSU's annual research awards increased from $307 million to $410 million. He also helped establish HealthShare of Oregon, the Portland coordinated care organization.

5. He oversaw the expansion of numerous clinical service line partnerships and served on Oregon Health Policy Board.

6. Dr. Robertson has offered to continue serving as president through June 15, 2018 (the academic year) without salary because of impending retirement benefits. He made the offer to "ensure continuity for OHSU during the search for the next president," he said in a statement.

7. The OHSU board will consider a resolution to accept his offer at its Oct. 26 public meeting.

8. Dr. Robertson is also hoping to continue providing care part-time at the Casey Eye Institute, which he has done during his tenure as president.
