Minnesota names new leader for mental health facilities

Marshall Smith, a longtime private hospital executive and healthcare consultant, has been chosen to lead Minnesota's state-operated mental health facilities, according to a Star Tribune report.

He will serve as CEO of direct care and treatment at the Minnesota Department of Human Services.

In this role, Mr. Smith will oversee two of Minnesota's largest mental hospitals, a network of seven smaller, short-term psychiatric hospitals, and state-operated treatment programs for people with drug or alcohol addictions, according to the report.

The Star Tribune reports that his appointment comes as Minnesota's state-operated mental health facilities have been plagued by care breakdowns and staffing problems.

Prior to taking on his new role, Mr. Smith was CEO of Regency Hospital in Golden Valley, Minn.
