MD Anderson names 1st chief scientific officer: 6 things to know

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston selected Giulio Draetta, MD, PhD, to serve as chief scientific officer, a new role.

Six things to know:

1. Dr. Draetta joined MD Anderson in 2011.

2. He most recently served as senior vice president for discovery and platforms and then chief academic officer, ad interim, for MD Anderson.

3. He also spent time as co-leader of MD Anderson's Moon Shots Program and vice president of the therapeutics discovery division.

4. Dr. Draetta maintains his faculty appointment as the Sewell Family Chair in the department of genomic medicine's cancer medicine at MD Anderson.

5. He has prior experience working at Pharmacia and Merck, and has also co-founded and led biotechnology companies.

6. In his new role, Dr. Draetta will drive innovation and partnerships as well as oversee the science and clinical translation of research programs.
