Lawrence Memorial Hospital CEO Gene Meyer to retire in 2016: 5 things to know

Gene Meyer, president and CEO of Lawrence (Kan.) Memorial Hospital, plans to retire in May 2016.

Here are five things to know about Mr. Meyer and his retirement.

1. Mr. Meyer has been CEO of LMH for 18 years and has served in a leadership role in local hospitals for a total of 35 years. Before joining LMH, he was senior executive officer for Saint Luke's South Hospital in Overland Park, Kan. He also served as senior executive officer for Saint Luke's-Shawnee Mission (Kan.) Medical Group.

2. During his tenure at LMH, Mr. Meyer has led expansion of patient care services and facilities. That includes the hospital adding oncology services, an interventional cardiology program, an acute rehabilitation unit and a wound healing center. Mr. Meyer also has led LMH to employment affiliations with 16 physician practices, overseen more than 200,000 square footage of new construction at the LMH campus that includes a medical office building, new emergency, surgical and oncology center facilities and expansion of the critical care, maternity, medical and surgical nursing units. The hospital's fourth floor rehabilitation unit is currently being renovated.

3. In announcing his retirement, Mr. Meyer attributed LMH's success to a strong leadership team. "The team that I have worked with has been an inspiration to me in their commitment and dedication. Many who have been with me for years and others who have moved on have made LMH what it is today," he said in a statement.

4. Mr. Meyer's retirement plans include teaching and serving as the executive in residence for the University of Kansas Health Services Administration Program in Lawrence. He is also committed to volunteer opportunities in Lawrence as well.

5. The LMH Board will be conducting a national search for Mr. Meyer's replacement in the near future.
