Johns Hopkins Health System taps Duke exec Kevin Sowers to serve as president

Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins Health System selected Kevin W. Sowers, MSN, RN, FAAN, to serve as president of the health system as well as executive vice president of Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins Medicine, effective Feb. 1, 2018.

Mr. Sowers currently serves as president and CEO of Duke University Hospital in Durham, N.C. He is also an adjunct professor at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health in Chapel Hill, N.C., and Duke University Fuqua School of Business in Durham. He has spent 32 years working at Durham-based Duke University Health System, serving in numerous roles, including COO of Duke University Hospital and interim CEO for Durham Regional Hospital.

Mr. Sowers serves as chair of the AmSurg board, and he is a member of the North Carolina Hospital Association's board of trustees as well as the North Carolina Institute of Medicine's board of directors. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.

Mr. Sowers succeeds Ronald R. Peterson, who announced his intention to retire by the end of the year.

Johns Hopkins Medicine, which is comprised of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Johns Hopkins Health System, includes six hospitals, four suburban healthcare and surgery centers and 39 primary and specialty care outpatient sites.
