Two senior research investigators for Sarah Cannon, the cancer institute of Nashville, Tenn.-based Hospital Corporation of America, have been promoted.
Here are seven things to know about the promotions.
Erika P. Hamilton, MD, has been promoted to director, breast and gynecologic cancer research program for the Sarah Cannon Research Institute.
1. Dr. Hamilton's research focuses on novel therapies, personalized medicine and immunotherapy.
2. In her new role, she will continue to care for patients at Sarah Cannon Research Institute in Nashville, and is an associate with Tennessee Oncology.
3. Dr. Hamilton earned a bachelor's degree from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va., and completed her medical degree and residency from University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
David Spigel, MD, was promoted to chief scientific officer.
4. In his new role, Dr. Spigel oversees the development and operations of Sarah Cannon's clinical research program and works with research physician leaders, biotech and pharma companies "to ensure the latest innovative treatments are available to patients," officials said.
5. Dr. Spigel, who joined Sarah Cannon in 2003 as the director of the lung cancer research program, has been involved in the development of immunotherapies and other targeted medicines in clinical trials at Sarah Cannon, that have led to new drug approvals, according to a news release.
6. In addition to his new responsibilities, Dr. Spigel continues to care for patients at Sarah Cannon Research Institute in Nashville.
7. He earned a bachelor's degree from Tulane University in New Orleans in 1992, and a medical degree from The University of Tennessee in Memphis in 1996.
Both Dr. Spigel and Dr. Hamilton are joining the Sarah Cannon research team to present insights on cancer research at the ASCO Annual Meeting this weekend in Chicago, which is the largest oncology meeting in the world.
