Durham, N.C.-based Duke University Hospital named Thomas A. Owens, MD, president, effective Jan. 1, 2018. He succeeds Kevin Sowers, who is leaving early in 2018 for Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins Health System, where he will serve as president as well as executive vice president of Johns Hopkins Medicine.
Mr. Owens was named senior vice president of Duke University Health System, and he will retain that title when he takes on his new role.
Mr. Owens currently served as CMO of Duke University Health System, responsible for overseeing the expansion of the health system's primary care network. He also served as the clinical leader in charge if implementing the organization's EMR system.
Mr. Owens' previous roles at Duke include serving as CMO for Duke University Hospital and as chief of the DUHS' hospital medicine program. He is trained in internal medicine and pediatrics.
