Seattle Children's hospital has announced its CEO Thomas N. Hansen, MD, will retire in 2015.
Dr. Hansen came to Seattle Children's Hospital as CEO in 2005. Before becoming CEO, Dr. Hansen spent the majority of his time in the laboratory trying to find ways to save the lives of premature infants with lung disease. While serving as CEO, he continued to spend one day a week in the laboratory continuing his research. Dr. Hansen plans to dedicate more time to research in his retirement.
Dr. Hansen was instrumental in developing Seattle-PAP, a device intended to provide breathing support to premature infants in developing countries at an affordable price. The Seattle-PAP is currently moving into clinical trials with the support of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
"We are extremely grateful for Tom's leadership and dedication to Seattle Children's for the last 20 years," said Judy Holder, chair of Seattle Children's board of trustees, in a release.
