California health system president, CEO to retire after 25 years

Steven Packer, MD, president and CEO of Montage Health in Monterey, Calif., has shared plans to retire next spring after 25 years in his role.

Prior to his time as president and CEO of the nonprofit health system, Dr. Packer served in several roles for Montage Health's Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, including chief of staff, according to a June 10 Montage Health news release.

During his time at Montage Health, Dr. Packer helped launch initiatives like the Pavilion Project at Community Hospital, which added 120 patient rooms to the facility.

He also helped lead the development of the Carol Hatton Breast Cancer Center in Monterey, the creation of Montage Medical Group and the construction of the Ryan Ranch outpatient campus in Monterey.

A national search will be launched to find a successor for Dr. Packer in the coming days, the release said.
