Broward Health expected to select CEO candidate: 6 things to know

The board chairman of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based Broward Health said the board aims to select the next CEO of the five-hospital system Wednesday, according to the Sun Sentinel.

Here are six things to know about the selection process.

1. The Broward Health board of commissioners will meet at the system's headquarters Wednesday to select their candidate for CEO among four finalists.

"I'm hoping that tomorrow we have a candidate," said Broward Health Board Chairman Rocky Rodriguez. "That's what I'm aiming at."

2. Board members will hear assessments of each of the four candidates from the system's hospital executives and medical staff. If the board does not select a new leader Wednesday, the hearing may at least narrow the field as officials continue with the selection process, according to the report.

3. The four finalists are:

  • Barbara Martin, former CEO of Vista Health System (Waukegan, Ill.)
  • Michael Young, former CEO of PinnacleHealth System (Harrisburg, Pa.)
  • Joseph Gilene, former president of KentuckyOne Health's Jewish Hospital (Louisville, Ky.)
  • Robert Minkin, former CEO of O'Connor Hospital (San Jose, Calif.), and St. Louise Regional Hospital (Gilroy, Calif.)

4. The CEO position has been held by series of interim executives since the health system's last permanent chief executive, Nabil El Sanadi, MD, was found dead in his home from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in January 2016.

5. Broward Health began interviewing candidates for the CEO position in October 2016, but suspended the process indefinitely later that month after a report revealed numerous issues at the health system.

6. More recently, three board members, the health system's interim CEO and a member of its general counsel were indicted for allegedly violating the state's open meetings law following the dismissal of one of the health system's previous interim CEOs. The five individuals filed a motion last December arguing the indictment should be dismissed because of prosecutorial misconduct and grand jury abuse.
