Beaumont Health names Susan Grant CNO: 11 things to know

Royal Oak, Mich.-based Beaumont Health has appointed Susan Grant, RN, BSN, executive vice president and CNO.

Here are 11 things to know about Ms. Grant.

1. She will join Beaumont Health in December.

2. In her new position, she will be responsible for the direction of nursing practice for the more than 10,000 nurses across Beaumont Health.  As the senior executive for nursing reporting directly to Beaumont Health's CEO, she will be a member of the executive team ensuring that patient care and nursing practice are always at the forefront in decisions.

3. Ms. Grant comes to Beaumont Health from Emory Healthcare in Atlanta where she has served as chief nurse executive and chief patient services officer since 2006. At Emory, she was responsible for the nursing practice for about 5,000 nurses across six hospitals and multiple clinic locations.

4. Under her leadership at Emory Healthcare, Emory University Hospital in Atlanta achieved its first Magnet designation, and Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital, also in Atlanta, achieved its fifth designation.

5. At Emory Healthcare, She also co-led the creation and implementation of the Emory Healthcare Care Transformation Model, the organization's vision on how to deliver ideal care to patients and their families.

6. In addition, she launched a systemwide Patient Family Advisor program at Emory Healthcare. The program provides a structured way for patients and their family members to provide valuable input in making decisions on quality, policies, facility designs and other programs that impact patients. At Emory Healthcare, she also served as the system executive leader managing the successful admissions and communications related to the first two patients with Ebola virus disease treated in the United States.

7. Aside from her other leadership roles, she served as interim dean of the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing at Emory University and associate dean for clinical leadership.

8. Prior to joining Emory Healthcare, Ms. Grant was CNO and senior associate administrator for patient care services at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle and chief of nursing and patient care services at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

9. Earlier in her career, she worked in South Carolina as a psychiatric liaison case manager at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and a nursing supervisor and director of nursing education at Kershaw County Hospital in Camden. 

10. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta; a master's in psychiatric and community mental health nursing at the University of South Carolina in Columbia; a year-long healthcare delivery management course at the Harvard Business School; and she is working on her doctorate in nursing practice at Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt University.

11. She was a Robert Wood Johnson executive nurse fellow and a Wharton nursing executive fellow who has won many national awards and recognitions and served on numerous state and national committees on nursing practices.
