Peter Andruszkiewicz, president and CEO of Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island, will retire as of May 1, 2016, according to The Associated Press.
His retirement marks the end of a 35-year career in healthcare, according to GoLocalProv.com.
Mr. Andruszkiewicz took the helm at the nonprofit insurer in 2011 after working at Kaiser Permanente. While at Blue Cross & Blue Shield, he helped turn the insurer around financially. Blue Cross had a $92 million premium deficiency reserve before Mr. Andruszkiewicz arrived, and by 2014, it made its first positive contribution of $22 million to reserves since 2007.
"It has been a great privilege to have the opportunity to lead Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island and to work with such a committed group of employees who care so deeply about the company, our customers and the community," Mr. Andruszkiewicz said. "It has long been part of my plan to retire at this point in my life and I am excited about what the next chapter will bring."
