American Medical Association gets new chief academic officer

The American Medical Association in Chicago has named Sanjay Desai, MD, chief academic officer and group vice president of medical education, effective Sept. 30. Dr. Desai will replace Susan Skochelak, MD, who has been with the organization for more than a decade, an Aug. 16 news release said.

Dr. Desai has served in a variety of medical education roles at Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins University, including director of the Osler Medical Residency and vice chair for education. He also served as an attending physician in John Hopkins Hospital's intensive care unit.

"I am excited to join the AMA team and build on the efforts underway to ensure medical students, residents, and practicing physicians are equipped to provide the best care for patients in the rapidly-evolving health care environment, increase diversity in the physician workforce, and work on behalf of America's physicians to improve the health of the nation," he said.
