The American Academy of Pediatrics has named Karen Remley, MD, executive director and CEO.
Here are five things to know about Dr. Remley.
1. In her role, Dr. Remley will lead the AAP, which represents 64,000 primary care pediatricians, pediatric medical subspecialists and pediatric surgical specialists.
2. Dr. Remley is the first female CEO of the AAP.
3. Dr. Remley replaces Errol Alden, MD, who was executive director and CEO for 11 years before stepping down this summer.
4. Dr. Remley previously served as CMO of Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield Virginia. From 2008 to 2012, she served as commissioner of health for the Commonwealth of Virginia. During her tenure, Virginia experienced significant improvement in key public health indicators including teen pregnancy, infant mortality and cardiovascular disease, according to Sleep Review. Dr. Remley has also served in various senior leadership roles in hospitals and medical nonprofits.
5. In a letter to AAP members, Dr. Remley said she is "eager to begin my work leading this impactful organization and to get to know many more of its members."
