7 months after sale to CHS, La Porte Hospital CEO Thor Thordarson steps down

La Porte (Ind.) Hospital CEO Thor Thordarson has resigned, according to a report by The Times of Northwest Indiana. The hospital had become an affiliate of Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems on March 1, after Indianapolis-based Indiana University Health sold a majority stake in the hospital to CHS.

Neither the hospital nor Mr. Thordarson gave any reason for his resignation. The hospital will begin searching for a permanent CEO immediately, and Gigi Fergus will serve as interim CEO. Ms. Fergus most recently served as a project executive at the hospital.

Mr. Thordarson has served as CEO since 2009, prior to which he served as interim CEO at Starke Hospital in Knox, Ind.

In September, CHS began working with advisers to explore a variety of options with financial sponsors, including the possible sale of its business. The news came after CHS ended the second quarter of 2016 with a $1.4 billion loss.

More recently, CHS sold three hospitals in Mississippi and one hospital in Florida to Clinton, Tenn.-based Curae Health and Chinese billionaire Tianqiao Chen upped his stake in CHS to nearly 13.8 percent.
