This year has been big for hospital CEO exits. Departures hit a four-year high in January and climbed 72 percent in the first four months of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022.
The following hospital and health system CEO exits — from retirements to resignations — were reported by Becker's in the first half of the year. They are listed by announcement date, from most to least recent:
1. Win Brown, president and CEO of Gardner, Mass.-based Heywood Healthcare for the past 12 years, will be leaving the system.
2. Josh Tinkle, interim CEO of Flagstaff-based Northern Arizona Healthcare, was placed on administrative leave amid a personnel investigation.
3. Ben Davis has left the top post at Osceola Regional Health Center in Sibley, Iowa, to helm Glencoe (Minn.) Regional Health.
4. Martin Padgett left his role as CEO of Jeffersonville, Ind.-based Clark Memorial Health and Scottsburg, Ind.-based Scott Memorial Health to pursue other opportunities.
5. Todd Burch is stepping down as president and CEO of McLaren Northern Michigan in Petoskey to pursue other opportunities.
6. Maureen Kahn, MSN, RN, will transition out of her role as president and CEO of Quincy, Ill.-based Blessing Health on July 1, approximately three months earlier than previously announced.
7. Brandon Haushalter resigned as CEO of HCA Florida Kendall Hospital in Miami for another opportunity outside of HCA Healthcare.
8. Greg Wood is retiring as CEO of Laurinburg, N.C.-based Scotland Health on Dec. 31.
9. Paul Clabuesch will retire as president CEO of Harbor Beach (Mich.) Community Hospital on June 30.
10. Steve Nierman has left his role as CEO of HCA Florida Blake Hospital in Bradenton, part of HCA Healthcare.
11. Michael Ellis retired as CEO of Navarro Regional Hospital in Corsicana, Texas, on May 26.
12. Jeremy Ensey has resigned as CEO of St. Luke Hospital and Living Center in Marion, Kan., telling a news outlet he feels his career is being led in another direction. He will remain at the hospital through late July.
13. Tanya Sharp has resigned as CEO of Boone County Health Center in Albion, Neb.
14. Leslie Barnes retired as CEO of Pueblo, Colo.-based Parkview Health System on May 31.
15. Richard Isaacs, MD, left Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente after a 28-year run with the system to join California Northstate University as the dean of its medical school. Dr. Isaacs served as CEO and executive director of the Permanente Medical Group and president and CEO of the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group since 2017.
16. Troy Greer stepped away from his role as president and CEO of Columbia, Mo.-based Boone Health to move closer to his family.
17. Barbara Rossman, BSN, CEO of Henry Ford Macomb Hospital in Clinton Township, Mich., will retire in June.
18. Bob Sutton will step down as president and CEO of Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Avera Health for health reasons on Sept. 30.
19. Mike Geeslin will step down as president and CEO of Austin, Texas-based Central Health by the end of 2023.
20. Brian Herwig retired as CEO of Perry County Memorial Hospital in Tell City, Ind.
21. B. Konard Jones will retire as president and CEO of Fairfield, Calif.-based NorthBay Health on Dec. 31.
22. Gregg Olson retired as CEO of Rochelle (Ill.) Community Hospital on March 31.
23. Garett May left his role as CEO of Merit Health Natchez (Miss.) to serve as chief operating officer of Crestwood Medical Center in Huntsville, Ala. Both hospitals are under the umbrella of Community Health Systems, based in Franklin, Tenn.
24. Jonathan Nalli left his role as CEO and ministry market executive of Indianapolis-based Ascension St. Vincent and senior vice president of St. Louis-based Ascension.
25. Perry Gay has resigned as president and CEO of Logansport (Ind.) Memorial Hospital. David Ameen, who helmed the hospital from 2010 to 2015, has left retirement to serve as interim CEO.
26. Steven Salyer resigned as CEO of Watsonville (Calif.) Community Hospital for family reasons.
27. Kimberly Boynton has stepped down as president and CEO of Syracuse, N.Y.-based Crouse Health.
28. Barbara Nichols, RN, is retiring as CEO of Corry (Pa.) Memorial Hospital after 23 years in the role.
29. Michael Zenn stepped down as CEO of University of Illinois Hospital and Clinics in May and moved into the new role of senior adviser for enterprise strategic initiatives within the university's office of the vice chancellor for health affairs.
30. Shawn Morrow is no longer CEO of Show Low, Ariz.-based Summit Healthcare.
31. Guy Hudson stepped down as chief executive of Renton, Wash.-based Providence's north division on April 1, and will step down as CEO of Seattle-based Swedish Health Services on Sept. 30.
32. Lori Herndon, BSN, RN, is retiring as president and CEO of Atlantic City, N.J.-based AtlantiCare.
33. Jay Finnegan retired as CEO of HCA Florida St. Lucie Hospital in Port St. Lucie, Fla., part of Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare, in April.
34. Deborah Wilson retired as CEO of Lawrence (Mass.) General Hospital in May.
35. Joseph "Jody" White is retiring as CEO of Lowell (Mass.) General Hospital.
36. Scott Kelly retired as president and CEO of Medford, Ore.-based Asante Health following a four-month leave of absence for health reasons.
37. Debbie Campbell was dismissed as CEO of Thomas H. Boyd Memorial Hospital in Carrollton, Ill., as the county board investigated the hospital's ambulance service.
38. Steve Johnson retired as president and CEO of Rockledge, Fla.-based Health First at the end of February.
39. Bradley Talbert, president and CEO of HCA Florida Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, accepted a new role as CEO of Memorial Health-Savannah (Ga.).
40. Jeanine Gentry resigned as CEO of Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez, Colo., after about one year in the role.
41. Paul Korth retired as CEO of Cookeville (Tenn.) Regional Medical Center on May 1.
42. Frank Calamari retired as president and CEO of New York City-based Calvary Hospital on March 10 after 36 years in the role.
43. Gary Honts retired as CEO of Indio, Calif.-based JFK Memorial Hospital.
44. David Henry left his role as CEO of Jackson, Miss.-based Merit Health Central to lead Merit Health Madison, about 25 miles away, amid service closures at Central.
45. Hank Milius, president and CEO of Muncie, Ind.-based Meridian Health Services, will retire at the end of 2023.
46. John Snow resigned as CEO of Oxford, N.C.-based Granville Health System after more than four years in the role.
47. David Elgarico resigned as CEO of Framingham, Mass.-based MetroWest Medical Center to return home to Oregon and be with his family.
48. Scott Phillips and David Pierce resigned as acting CEO and acting CFO of El Centro (Calif.) Regional Medical Center. The two were managing directors for the hospital's management firm, Healthcare Management Partners, and stepped down after the firm issued the hospital a termination notice.
49. Stan Holm is no longer president and CEO of Olathe (Kan.) Health now that the health system has become part of the University of Kansas Health System.
50. Tony Keene is no longer CEO of Kirksville, Mo.-based Northeast Regional Medical Center.
51. Dustin Greene left his role as CEO of HCA's TriStar Skyline Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn., and accepted a role as CEO of Henderson, Texas-based QuickVisit Urgent Care.
52. Mike Murrill stepped down as president and CEO of AdventHealth's Redmond, Ga., hospital and its Southeast region, which oversees hospitals in Georgia, Kentucky and North Carolina. Moving forward, separate CEOs will be named to AdventHealth Redmond and the Southeast region.
53. Gary Horan retired as president and CEO of Elizabeth, N.J.-based Trinitas Regional Medical Center, part of West Orange, N.J.-based RWJBarnabas Health.
54. Kevin Manemann left his role as CEO of Renton, Wash.-based Providence's South division. He accepted a new position with Duarte, Calif.-based City of Hope.
55. Kevin Slavin will retire as president and CEO of Paterson, N.J.-based St. Joseph's Health at the end of 2023. He spent nine years in the role.
56. Scott Boston, MD, resigned as president and CEO of Jacksonville (Ill.) Memorial Hospital.
57. Scott Cihak, president and CEO of Nashville, Tenn.-based TriStar Centennial Medical Center, resigned for personal reasons after 31 years with HCA Healthcare.
58. Ashley McClellan resigned as CEO of HCA Midwest Health's Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo.
59. Don Caruso, MD, president and CEO of Keene, N.H.-based Cheshire Medical Center, retired in May. The hospital is part of Lebanon, N.H.-based Dartmouth Health.
60. Steve Dietlin retired as CEO of Oceanside, Calif.-based Tri-City Medical Center in March.
61. Carole Peet, MSN, RN, stepped down from her role as president and CEO of Yakima (Wash.) Valley Memorial Hospital in January. The hospital, which was previously affiliated with Seattle-based Virginia Mason Health System, recently reached an acquisition agreement with Tacoma, Wash.-based MultiCare Health System.
62. Joe Hugar is no longer president and CEO of Campbellsville, Ky.-based Taylor Regional Hospital.
63. Alfred Pilong Jr. is no longer CEO of Middletown, N.Y.-based Garnet Health. The health system's board terminated his three-year contract after the first year and named Jerry Dunlavey — its current vice president of operations and COO of its hospital in Monticello, N.Y. — to the interim post.
