Steven J. Stack, MD, an emergency physician practicing in Lexington, Ky., has been sworn in as the 170th president of the American Medical Association.
Here are six things to know about Dr. Stack, according to AMA.
1. Dr. Stack, 43, is the first emergency physician to serve as AMA president and the organization's youngest president in the last 160 years.
2. During the last eight years, Dr. Stack has served in many leadership positions with AMA, including board chairman and secretary.
3. Prior to serving on the AMA board, Dr. Stack was an elected leader within numerous state, national and specialty medical associations.
4. Dr. Stack is known for his expertise in health information technology. He served as chairman of AMA's Health Information Technology Advisory Group from 2007 to 2013. He has also served on multiple federal advisory groups for the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology and as Secretary for eHealth Initiative, a nonprofit multi-stakeholder organization.
5. In Kentucky, Dr. Stack previously served as medical director of the emergency departments at Saint Joseph East in Lexington and Saint Joseph Mount Sterling in rural eastern Kentucky.
6. He was also previously medical director of the emergency department at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.
