St. Louis-based Ascension has announced two leadership changes in the Tennessee Ministry.
Here are five things to know about the new leaders.
Karen Springer has been named senior vice president, Ascension Health/Tennessee Ministry Market executive and president and CEO of Saint Thomas Health, a Nashville, Tenn.-based division of Ascension.
1. Ms. Springer previously served as Saint Thomas Health president and COO with responsibility for operational success and effectiveness of Saint Thomas Health hospital facilities, physician practices and a number of joint ventures, according to Ascension.
2. Ms. Springer was named COO in 2011, joining Saint Thomas Health after serving as executive vice president/COO at Lutheran Hospital of Indiana in Fort Wayne for four years. She was named president of Saint Thomas Health in 2015.
3. Ms. Springer began her healthcare leadership career in the Lutheran Hospital System in Fort Wayne, serving first as director for cardiovascular and medical/surgical ICUs. From 1997 to 2000, she was CNO for the Rehabilitation Hospital in Fort Wayne with direct responsibility for hospital operations and for multiple patient care departments in a setting focused on restoration of abilities. For Dupont Hospital in Fort Wayne, she held increasingly responsible positions and was responsible for construction of a new $52 million facility, serving as both COO and CNO. Ms. Springer served as president and CEO of Mountain View Regional Medical Center, in Las Cruces, N.M., from July 2006 to September 2007.
Mike Schatzlein, MD, who was named Saint Thomas Health CEO in 2010 and also served as Ascension Health Ministry Market leader for Indiana and Tennessee, will take on the role of senior vice president, Ascension Health/Group Ministry operating executive.
4. In his new position, Dr. Schatzlein will be responsible for overall senior leadership of the Tennessee/Indiana ministry markets.
5. In addition to that responsibility, he also will oversee the operational and financial performance of stewarding quality, strategic growth, and experience and safety outcomes of multiple other Ascension Ministry Markets.
