3 more execs resign from Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital

The chief patient safety officer of Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, Fla., and two other executives have resigned less than a month after three other executives stepped down from their positions at the hospital.

Here are four things to know:

1. In a statement issued Jan. 2, the hospital said the following executives resigned: Brigitta Mueller, MD, vice president of medical affairs and chief patient safety officer, and Sylvia Ameen, vice president of marketing, communication and culture. All Children's also said Gerhard Ziemer, MD, PhD, who was appointed in August as director of the heart institute and chief of cardiovascular surgery, would leave the hospital.

2. All Children's Hospital has experienced a leadership exodus in recent months. In December, the hospital's CEO, the heart institute deputy director and a vice president resigned.

3. The leadership shakeup comes after a Tampa Bay Times investigation found the mortality rate at All Children's heart institute tripled between 2015 and 2017. The hospital had the highest mortality rate of any pediatric heart surgery program in Florida in 2017, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

4. In addition to the leadership changes, the hospital hired a team of external experts to assess the heart institute from a clinical perspective and to help set a timeline to restart the program.
