20 Recent Hospital & Healthcare Executive Moves

1. John McGee, president and CEO of Solaris Health System, has left the Edison, N.J.-based organization to pursue other opportunities. Mr. McGee will be replaced by Solaris' executive vice president and COO, Raymond Fredericks.

2. Luke Gregory was named permanent CEO of Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenn. Mr. Gregory's position is effective immediately since he has been serving as interim CEO of the 238-bed hospital since Sept. 2010.

3. Finley Hospital in Dubuque, Iowa, hired David R. Brandon as president and CEO. He will begin his new position at the 126-bed hospital by mid-February. Mr. Brandon will replace John Knox, who left Finley to become president and CEO of Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa.

4. Polly Davenport was named CEO of the 165-bed Ochsner Medical Center – North Shore hospital. Most recently, Ms. Davenport was CEO of Val Verde Regional Medical Center in Del Rio, Texas.

5. Travis Capers was named CEO of the 181-bed Ochsner Medical Center – West Bank. Most recently, Mr. Capers was COO of HCA-Southern Hills Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn.

6. Boston-based Steward Health Care System hired Jeffrey Liebman as president of Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton, Mass. Most recently, Mr. Liebman was president and CEO of the Beth Israel Deaconess Healthcare campus in Needham, a position he held since 2003. Mr. Liebman succeeds Steven R. Gordon.

7. Pioneers Memorial Healthcare District in Brawley, Calif., appointed Daniel W. Smith as CFO. His appointment is effective this month. Most recently, Mr. Smith served as CFO and district compliance officer for Samaritan Healthcare in Lake Moses, Wash. 

8. Murray-Calloway County Hospital in Murray, Ky., named Jerome "Jerry" Penner as CEO. He will begin his tenure on April 1, replacing Brad Bloemer, who was named interim CEO in Oct. 2010.

9. Lee Chaykin was named CEO of Kendall Regional Medical Center in Miami. Mr. Chaykin will come to KRMC from his post as CEO of University Hospital and Medical Center in Tamarac, Fla., which he has held since 2007. Both UHMC and KRMC are owned by Nashville, Tenn.-based Hospital Corporation of America. Mr. Chaykin will replace Mauricio Sirvent.

10. Coshocton (Ohio) Hospital named Bob Miller as CEO. He was the hospital's acting CEO, in addition to his CFO responsibilities, since July 2010.

11. Houston Physicians' Hospital in Webster, Texas, appointed Michele Dionne as CEO. HPH is part of Leawood, Kan.-based Nueterra Healthcare. 

12. Leo Brideau, president and CEO of Milwaukee-based Columbia St. Mary's Health System, accepted a senior position at St. Louis-based Ascension Health. Mr. Brideau will be replaced by Mark Taylor, the president and CEO of Genesys Health System, which is based in Grand Blanc, Mich., and part of Ascension. Mr. Taylor will begin his new duties on Feb. 15.

13. David C. Hogan, COO of Memphis-based Baptist Memorial Health Care, will retire at the end of the month after 29 years with the system. He will be replaced by Jason Little, who has served as CEO and administrator at three BMHC hospitals.

14. Matthew J. Wenzel was named CEO of Hedrick Medical Center in Chillicothe, Mo., a member of a Kansas City, Mo.-based Saint Luke's Health System.

15. Akron (Ohio) General Health System appointed Stephen M. Gary as senior vice president and CFO. Most recently, Mr. Gary served as senior vice president and CFO for St. Vincent Health System in Erie, Penn. He will join AGHS on Jan. 3.

16. Alan Wade Biggs was named vice president of financial services and CFO of Kokomo, Ind.-based Howard Regional Health System. Mr. Biggs’ position is effective Jan. 31. Most recently, he served as COO of Logansport (Ind.) Memorial Hospital.

17. Chris Mattingly was named interim CEO and CFO of Bamberg (S.C.) County Hospital. His appointment follows the BCH board’s Dec. 26 decision to put Carl Menist, the hospital’s previous interim CFO, on administrative leave pending the completion of a financial audit.

18. Bill Walczak, CEO of Codman Square Health Center in Dorchester, Mass., will leave to become president of Caritas Christi’s Carney Hospital in Dorchester. Mr. Walczak co-founded CSHC in 1974 and has served as CEO for the past 36 years. CSHC’s COO, Sandra Cotterall, will replace Mr. Walczak as CEO.

19. G. Richard Hastings, president and CEO of Kansas City, Mo.-based Saint Luke's Health System, announced his July 31 retirement. Mr. Hastings has been CEO since 1996 and has worked with the St. Luke's system for more than 35 years.

20. Saint Louis University Hospital named Phillip Sowa as CEO. He replaces Crystal Haynes, who resigned last month.
