CEO William Thompson: Published Author and Leader of SSM Health Care

William P. Thompson has served as president and CEO of St. Louis-based SSM Health Care since August 2011.

Prior to his current position, Mr. Thompson served as the system's president and COO for two years. He has been with SSM Health Care since 1980, serving in a variety of leadership positions throughout his time with the system, including senior vice president of strategic development.

Two of Mr. Thompson's main focuses are quality improvement and physician alignment, and he coauthored published material on both of those topics. On quality improvement, Mr. Thompson coauthored the book "CQI and the Renovation of an American Health System – A Culture Under Construction" in 1997 with the former CEO of SSM Health Care, Sister Mary Jean Ryan. He is also the coauthor of a chapter on physician alignment in the book "Getting It Done: Experienced Healthcare Leaders Reveal Field-Tested Strategies for Clinical and Financial Success."

In addition to being a published author, Mr. Thompson travels across the nation to speak about performance excellence and has chaired the Quality Improvement Committee for the Premier healthcare alliance.

Mr. Thompson holds a master's degree in hospital administration from St. Louis University.
