Richard Miller serves as president and CEO of Virtua Health in Marlton, N.J. The non-profit, multi-hospital healthcare system was formed in 1998 by the merger of Mount Holly, N.J.-based Memorial Health Alliance and Marlton-based West Jersey Health System.
Since the creation of Virtua, Mr. Miller has led the system by following a values-based culture defined by the "Star Initiative," adopting Six Sigma and other process improvement tools, partnering with industry leaders such as GE, and transforming a group of community-based hospitals into technologically advanced regional medical centers. As a result, Virtua has become an international model for effective healthcare management, receiving many awards for its clinical excellence, leadership, patient engagement and employee satisfaction, including the New Jersey Governor's Award for Clinical Excellence, the Leadership Award for Outstanding Achievement from Voluntary Hospitals of America, a nationwide network of community-owned healthcare systems and physicians, and multiple Consumer Choice Awards from National Research Corp.
Mr. Miller has received many awards and recognitions recognizing his leadership and service to the community. He was recognized nationally with appointments to the Leadership Advisory Council of the Joint Commission Center for Transforming Healthcare and to the Governing Council of Healthcare Executives for the American Hospital Association. Mr. Miller was also recognized on the list of 291 Hospital and Health System Leaders to Know by Becker's Hospital Review.
