CEO Jim Burkhart: Experienced Safety Net Hospital Leader at Tampa General Hospital

Jim Burkhart has served as president and CEO of Tampa (Fla.) General Hospital since March 2013.

 

Prior to taking the reins at Tampa General, Dr. Burkhart was president and CEO of UF&Shands Jacksonville Medical Center. While there, he set the strategic direction for the hospital. Additionally, he served as senior associate dean for medical center affairs at the University of Florida College of Medicine.

James BurkhartHis time leading UF&Shands helped prepare him well to lead Tampa General, since both hospitals are safety net hospitals and members of the Safety Net Alliance of Florida, of which Dr. Burkhart now serves as chairman.

"(Dr.) Burkhart has the skill set and experience we wanted," David A. Straz Jr., chairman of the governing board for Tampa General, said in a news release announcing Mr. Burkhart's appointment at Tampa General. "He has managed a safety net hospital that has faced financial challenges due to state cuts to reimbursements."

When he's not busy leading Tampa General and the Safety Net Alliance of Florida, Dr. Burkhart serves in an advisory capacity on several boards, including the Tampa Hillsborough Economic Development Council and the University of Alabama at Birmingham Dean's Advisory Board.

Dr. Burkhart earned a Doctorate of Science in health services administration and a master's degree in healthcare administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.
