George B. Hernandez Jr., JD, serves as president and CEO of University Health System in San Antonio, Texas. University Health System is comprised of University Hospital, a non-profit HMO, a non-profit multi-specialty physician practice and joint ownership of San Antonio AirLIFE, an air medical transport system.
Mr. Hernandez has been with the system since 1990 and has been at the helm since 2005. Under his leadership, University Health System has received numerous awards, including being named the best hospital in the San Antonio region by U.S. News & World Report for 2012-2013. Additionally, University Health System is the only system in San Antonio and south Texas to have earned Magnet status for excellence in nursing, according to the system. The system earned Magnet recognition in 2010.
In addition to his 23-year commitment to making University Health System the best in the region, Mr. Hernandez is also committed to the success of healthcare organizations throughout Texas: In January, he assumed the post of chairman of the Texas Hospital Association. "This coming year will be one of transformation for the healthcare industry, as hospitals and health systems retool to meet the challenges and opportunities of the Affordable Care Act and the state's 1115 Medicaid waiver," he said in a news release about his new post. "I am honored to serve as chairman of this important organization at such a historic moment."
Mr. Hernandez earned his law degree from George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
