Nick Turkal, MD, serves as president and CEO of Aurora Health Care in Milwaukee, Wis., a system he has been with since 1987.
Dr. Turkal has held various leadership positions during his more than 25 years with Aurora, including senior vice president and CMO of Aurora Health Care and president of the system's Metro Region, overseeing Aurora Health Care's operations in the greater Milwaukee area.
During his time at the helm of Aurora Health Care, Dr. Turkal has helped the system move through the changing nature of the healthcare industry. For instance, in 2012, he led Aurora Health Care to develop a joint venture with Franklin, Tenn.-based IASIS Healthcare to pursue acquisitions, new construction and management of facilities and to develop clinical services.
"Healthcare is undergoing rapid and fundamental change and leading-edge systems are finding ways to manage these changes," Dr. Turkal said in a news release. In addition to his duties leading the comprehensive, integrated system, Dr. Turkal served as chair-elect and chair of the Wisconsin Hospital Association in 2010 and 2011. He is also heavily involved with the United Way, and has served on the boards of several organizations.
Due to his healthcare leadership prowess, Dr. Turkal has been named to this publication's 2013 lists of "125 Physician Leaders of Hospitals and Health Systems" and "130 Nonprofit Hospital and Health System CEOs to Know."
In his spare time, Dr. Turkal enjoys staying active and tries to run six days each week.
