Charles W. Sorenson, MD, has served as president and CEO of Salt Lake City-based Intermountain Healthcare, one of the largest nonprofit health systems in the country, since the end of 2008.
Prior to taking the helm at Intermountain, Dr. Sorenson served as the system's executive vice president and COO, a role he held for about 10 years.
Throughout his career, Dr. Sorenson has been committed to improving clinical processes and implementing best practices. He played a large role in creating Intermountain Medical Group, an employed practice of about 900 physicians, and served as the founding chair of the Medical Group Board from 1994 to 1998. Dr. Sorenson guided Intermountain to have a system-wide focus on implementing best clinical practices to produce better patient outcomes.
Outside time spent leading Intermountain, Dr. Sorenson is an adjunct professor of surgery at the University of Utah. He has also served as president of Utah Urologic Society and speaker of the house of delegates of the Utah Medical Association.
Dr. Sorenson has received national accolades for his healthcare leadership. Becker's Hospital Review named him to its 2013 list of 130 Nonprofit Hospital and Health System CEOs to Know and the 2012 list of 300 Hospital and Health System Leaders to Know.
Dr. Sorenson is a board-certified urologic surgeon, and he earned his medical degree from the Cornell University Medical College. He continues to practice surgery, focusing on urologic oncology.
