Cloud computing and data tools have accelerated a shift that is moving IT leaders from back-end support to more strategic, front-facing roles, according to The Wall Street Journal.
As cloud becomes more prevalent, cloud providers are taking on tasks that have traditionally fallen under the purview of the CIO, such as software management and infrastructure maintenance. This has freed up CIOs across industries to begin to focus more strategically on growth initiatives and new services to attract consumers. WSJ cites a 2018 Korn Ferry report that found 83 percent of 200 IT executives agreed their roles have become more strategic in the past three years.
As part of this shift, WSJ notes many IT titles are changing — many CIOs now hold joint titles, such as CIO and digital officer — as leaders move on to executive committees at their organizations. Similarly, CIO salary is up. WSJ cites data from staffing firm Mondo that indicates the average CIO salary is up $10,000 from 2018 to $300,000.
