White House outlines privacy principles for Precision Medicine Initiative

After President Obama announced the Precision Medicine Initiative in his 2015 State of the Union address, the White House developed an interagency working group to develop privacy and trust principles for activities within the initiative.

Led by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, HHS' Office for Civil Rights and the National Institutes of Health, the work group developed privacy and trust principles in the following six categories:

1. Governance

2. Transparency

3. Respecting participant preferences

4. Participant empowerment through access to information

5. Data sharing, access and use

6. Data quality and integrity
