VA taps physician who was in charge of EHR overhaul as acting CIO: 4 details

The Department of Veterans Affairs named Neil Evans, MD, as its new acting CIO and leader of its healthcare modernization and innovation initiatives, Nextgov reported Aug. 30. 

Four details: 

1. Dr. Evans is board certified in both internal medicine and clinical informatics. 

2. He most recently served as the chief officer of the Veterans Health Administration's Office of Connected Care, which heads VA's telehealth program, patient portal and mobile programs. 

3. Dr. Evans has been with the VA in several clinical informatics roles over the past two decades. He also has served as interim director of the federal EHR modernization program, which includes VA's $16B EHR implementation project with Cerner. 

4. The VA's former acting CIO, Dominic Cussatt, will take on a new position at the State Department, a VA spokesperson told Nextgov
