Urban EDs More Likely Than Rural Counterparts to Adopt CPOEs

Emergency departments in urban areas may be more likely to adopt computerized physician order entry than EDs in rural areas, according to an article published in Annals of Emergency Medicine.

Researchers surveyed 351 EDs in Massachusetts, Colorado, Georgia and Oregon for CPOE adoption in 2008 — before the government introduced incentives for healthcare IT. They found 30 percent of all EDs had adopted CPOE, but the odds of adoption were .07 for rural EDs and .39 for urban EDs.
