UC Irvine Notifies Patients of Data Breach Caused By Computer Virus

University of California Irvine's student health center has notified patients their personal and health information was compromised when its computers were infected with a keystroke logger virus.

From Feb.14 to March 27, the keystroke logger virus captured all data entered into three infected computers at the health center and then sent the information to unauthorized servers, according to the notification letter.

The virus captured and sent affected patients' names, patient identification numbers, mailing addresses, telephone numbers and bank names. The virus also may have captured patient's health and dental insurance numbers and diagnoses.

After discovering the keystroke virus, the computers were immediately disconnected from the Internet to prevent further patient information from being compromised, according to the notification letter.
