The University of California, Berkeley is sending approximately 80,000 people notice of a cyberattack affecting a system containing Social Security numbers and bank account information.
Here are five things to know about the data breach.
1. The breach occurred in December 2015. The hackers gained access to the Berkeley Financial System, a software application the campus uses for financial management, nonsalary payments and purchasing.
2. The breach affects approximately 57,000 current and former students, 18,800 current and former employees and 10,300 vendors. About half of the university's current students and 65 percent of its active employees are affected.
3. UC Berkeley has informed the FBI and other law enforcement agencies.
4. Thus far, the university has found no evidence of the compromised information being used. UC Berkeley is offering free credit protection services.
5. "The security and privacy of the personal information provided to the university is of great importance to us. We regret that this occurred and have taken additional measure to better safeguard that information," said UC Berkeley CISO Paul Rivers.
