The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services estimates that total Medicare and Medicaid electronic health record payments since the incentive program began in January 2011 surpassed $10.3 billion at the end of 2012, according to a Healthcare Finance News report.
CMS will post final figures later in January when it receives the most complete data.
According to the report, CMS believes it has given incentive payments to a total of 180,200 physicians and hospitals through December since the EHR Incentive Program's inception in January 2011. December 2012 alone saw $1.25 billion in payments, according to estimates. More specifically, 10,000 Medicare eligible physicians received $175 million, 4,200 Medicaid physicians received $80 million and 850 hospitals received $1 billion under the combined programs, according to the report.
