As physicians' use of mobile device has proliferated, many hospitals and healthcare organizations have implemented policies that allow clinicians to use mobile devices in the workplace while safeguarding patients' protected health information. More than half of the respondents to HIMSS Third Annual Mobile Technology Survey reported having such a policy in place.
The most-reported features of these policies include:
A process for managing lost or stolen devices: 84 percent
Standards for securing the device (passwords, etc): 80 percent
Rules on the use of personal devices: 76 percent
Ability to access data remotely: 76 percent
Types of approved apps: 51 percent
Brand/version of device accepted: 47 percent
Survey results were based on responses from 170 health IT executives from a variety of healthcare organizations. About two-thirds of respondents work for hospitals or integrated delivery systems, and 14 percent for ambulatory facilities or physician practices.
