Like provider organizations, payers are increasingly turning to big data and data analytics to glean actionable information about their patient populations. A recent roundtable featuring 20 executives from large payer organizations convened by HIMSS revealed three of payers' top challenges when it comes to data analytics.
- Data integration. Like providers, payers are struggling to combine data gathered through IT systems operating on different platforms. Additionally, merger and acquisition activity within the payer industry is forcing organizations to join proprietary systems, exacerbating the issue.
- Data governance. Many provider organizations are currently struggling with developing a strategy regarding data analytics. Determining data ownership, deciding when and how to share data and leveraging available data effectively are all top of mind for payer executives.
- Access to clinical data. Many payers do not have optimal access to clinical and claims data from providers. The barriers here are often more legal and logistical than technical, as payers and providers do not yet know how to effectively work with each other for data exchange.
