Artificial intelligence is not merely a technological tool but a strategic advantage and a competitive differentiator for Atlantic Health System, Sunil Dadlani, the system's chief information and digital transformation officer, told Becker's.
The Morristown, N.J.-based health system's AI journey has progressed from initial exploration to a deliberate "AI-first" strategy. Mr. Dadlani explains that this approach focuses not on the technology itself but on identifying the specific problems and opportunities within the health system that AI can address, spanning both clinical and nonclinical applications such as patient experience, revenue cycle management, and supply chain optimization.
"You need to approach AI integration methodically, avoiding the pitfalls of chasing after the latest 'shiny toys' or falling into the trap of AI tech toy syndrome," Mr. Dadlani said. "It's crucial to be mindful of where the technology is fully matured and ensure that your partner ecosystem is robust. Our focus is on integrating technologies in a way that leverages their full potential and aligns with our strategic goals."
Mr. Dadlani highlighted two significant areas where AI is making an impact. Firstly, AI-enabled conversation platforms are improving patient engagement by offering 24/7 access to care. These platforms use natural language processing to handle patient queries, facilitate appointment scheduling, and manage medical refills, thereby enhancing patient satisfaction and reducing reliance on call centers.
Secondly, AI is helping to alleviate clinical burnout by streamlining communication between patients and care teams. By managing routine inquiries and freeing up provider time, these technologies enhance efficiency, improve patient care and help reduce overall healthcare costs.
"We are introducing capabilities that offer real-time healthcare services around the clock, meeting patients and healthcare consumers where they are," Mr. Dadlani said."These technologies not only facilitate immediate access to care but also provide valuable resources such as healthcare education and lab result interpretation. They play a crucial role in various aspects of healthcare delivery, enhancing both patient experience and overall service efficiency."
Mr. Dadlani expressed excitement about the rapid advancements in AI and its potential to drive significant change in healthcare. He noted that while AI technologies come with challenges, like bias and ethical concerns, the industry is progressing quickly in addressing such issues.
