The Executive Most Often Held Accountable for Innovation (It's Not the CIO)

Clinical leaders, not the CIO or other IT leadership, are most often the hospital executives responsible for innovation, according to a new survey from HIMSS and innovation accelerator AVIA.

Of the 92 organizations surveyed, 17 percent said clinical leadership was primarily responsible for innovation. CEOs are responsible for innovation at 16 percent of organizations, edging out CIOs (15 percent).

Twelve percent of respondents reported innovation was handled by a Chief Innovation Officer at their organization. However, not all organizations have a Chief Innovation Officer. According to the survey, they are much more prevalent at larger organizations (64 percent of those with annual revenues over $5 billion have one) than at smaller organizations (10 percent of those with annual revenues under $250 million have one).
