Telemedicine expedites stroke patient recovery in Florida hospitals

A telemedicine program implemented at Lee Memorial Health System acute care hospitals in the Fort Myers, Fla., area has been shown to reduce delay in treatment.

Bill Carracino, MD, the CIO of Lee Memorial Health System, is the first neurologist in Lee County, Fla., to use telemedicine to treat a stroke, according to a Jan. 28 news release. Implementing telemedicine methods allows neurologists who are off-site to consult emergency department physicians and nurses on how to treat a stroke patient.

"There are obvious benefits to our community in the level and speed of care we're able to provide," Dr. Carracino said in the news release.
