The Mississippi Insurance Department has selected Teladoc to provide telehealth to 13,000 volunteer firefighters via smart phone or computer video visits.
"Teladoc will be a valuable benefit to the state and our volunteer firefighters," Mike Chaney, state fire marshal and Mississippi commissioner of insurance, said in a news release. "Through Teladoc we can offer our volunteer firefighters and their families affordable, convenient access to quality health care, minimize time away due to illness as well as time spent traveling to and awaiting medical care which is not always available in rural areas."
The first program of its kind in the country, the Mississippi Insurance Department expects the telehealth offering to act as a recruiting incentive for the volunteer firefighting department.
