The Texas attorney general's office has concluded its investigation into Houston-based Memorial Hermann Health System regarding a policy that allegedly prevented parents from accessing their children's medical records once they become teenagers.
The investigation, which was initiated in 2022 in response to complaints, revealed that the hospital's policy preventing parental access to records after a child turned 13 was caused by technological limitations, according to a Nov. 16 press release from Attorney General Ken Paxton.
This comes after Memorial Hermann had suggested that state law prohibited access.
"The Office of the Attorney General determined that, instead, it was MHHS's own technological limitations that accounted for the restriction," the press release said.
To address the issue, Memorial Hermann will introduce a new digital program that grants parents complete access to their children's medical records. While awaiting the implementation of this program, according to the release, Memorial Hermann's website will have clear instructions for parents on how to obtain medical records for their adolescent children.
