Survey Shows Hospital-Owned Practices Lead in Adoption of EHRs

A survey conducted by SK&A, a healthcare information solutions and research company, showed that hospital- and health system-owned medical practices are leading the industry in adoption of electronic health records, according to a company news release.

Results from the biannual survey, "Physician Office Usage of Electronic Healthcare Records Software," showed a 10 percent increase of hospital- and health system-owned medical practices adopted EHRs between Jan. and Oct. 2010. This is significantly higher than the three percent increase in overall EHR adoption rate.

Other findings from the survey include the following:

•    Physician offices with more exam rooms, more physicians on staff and higher daily patient volumes had the highest adoption rates.
•    Northern and Southern states had the highest rates of adoption, at 40.9 and 40.1 percent, respectively.
•    The top three leading states for adoption were Minnesota (62.6 percent), Utah (55.4 percent) and Wisconsin (52.3 percent).
