Cyber security professionals earn an average of $116,000 per year, according to a survey by Semper Secure.
A calculator developed by MeriTalk and Semper Secure helps employers determine the expected salary of a cyber security employee based on education, years of experience and more.
However, survey results indicate an organization's reputation and mission contribute strongly to these professionals' choice of employer. Just 25 percent of respondents are most motivated by the average pay of $55.77 per hour — 44 percent are driven by the opportunity to "do something important and meaningful."
The report suggests highlighting a hospital or health system's mission may help lure hard-to-find cyber security professionals away from positions with the government or in manufacturing, where 28 percent currently work.
"The Cyber Security Census" was compiled from the responses of 500 cyber security professionals, collected in May 2013.
