Although 80 percent of CIOs and other healthcare executives believe utilizing big data is important to their hospital's strategic goals, 84 percent say using big data presents a challenge to their organization, according to a recent survey.
The survey, conducted by the eHealth Initiative and the College of Health Information Management Executives, surveyed health IT leaders at 102 organizations in May and June of this year.
Other findings include:
- 45 percent reported having a plan for managing big data
- 18 percent have staff trained to collect and analyze data, 16 percent outsource this task
- 77 percent pull data from administrative sources, 75 percent pull from claims data
- 90 percent of respondents use analytics for quality improvement
- 82 percent see population health management as an important application of big data and analytics
