Surescripts, a nationwide health information network, announced that EHR developer NextGen Healthcare will join its electronic prior authorization system.
The addition will include approximately 250,000 prescribers nationwide, according to a news release. NextGen will use CompletEPA, Surescripts' software, to audit prior authorizations for prescriptions. Physicians on the system receive an electronic notification if a prior authorization is necessary and answer a series of questions which are submitted to the health plan for approval.
"Prior authorization has been a pain point for providers and patients alike," said Michael Lovett, executive vice president and general manager for NextGen Healthcare, in a news release. "Through our collaborative efforts with Surescripts, we are providing the industry with the tools necessary to alleviate this frustration while saving time and resources."
