Federal incentive payments for e-prescribing have led to a widespread adoption of the practice, according to a study in Health Affairs.
Researchers associated the passage of the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act in 2008, which includes incentive payments, with a 40 percent increase in e-prescribing by December 2010.
Additionally, incentive payments were found to be linked to a 9 to 11 percent increase in e-prescribing among physicians who were already using e-prescribing technology.
